Hello. Running Recoll 1.23.2 + Xapian 1.2.22 on this Ubuntu:
LSB Version: core-9.20160110ubuntu0.2-amd64:core-9.20160110ubuntu0.2-noarch:printing-9.20160110ubuntu0.2-amd64:printing-9.20160110ubuntu0.2-noarch:security-9.20160110ubuntu0.2-amd64:security-9.20160110ubuntu0.2-noarch
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
Release: 16.04
Codename: xenial
I started the app by configuring 3% maximum disk quota for the index and then updated the index. The operation failed.
Ran recollindex -z. The operation failed. Sorry I missed the output; only retrieved this message: "RECFILTERROR HELPERNOTFOUND"
Changed the disk quota to 0%. Ran recollindex -z again.
It worked.
Sorry, could not locate the log file. What's its name?

2017-07-17The disk occupation factor is not the maximum used by the index, it is the disk occupation value at which point indexing will stop and fail. So 80-90 % would be a more likely value than 3%. 0 % is the value used to mean "no checking" (this was a bad choice, and 100% would have been a less confusing value, but it's too late to change).
HELPERNOTFOUND just means that some auxiliary app is missing for a specific document type. You can get the list of missing helpers from the help menu.
recollindex logs to stderr by default. You can set the log file name and verbosity level in the preferences / indexing configuration section.
