<h1><a href="http://www.recoll.org/">Recoll</a> is
a personal full text search tool for Unix/Linux.</h1>
<p>It is based on the very strong <a href=
"http://www.xapian.org">Xapian</a> back-end, for which it
provides a feature-rich yet easy to use front-end with a Qt
graphical interface.</p>
<p><span class="application">Recoll</span> is free, open source,
and licensed under the GPL. The current version is
<a class="important" href="download.html">1.15.8</a>
(<a href="release-1.15.html">Release notes</a>).</p>
<h2>Features: </h2>
<ul>
<li>Easy installation, few dependancies. No database daemon,
web server, desktop environment or exotic language necessary.</li>
<li>Will run on most Unix-based <a
href="features.html#systems">systems</a></li>
<li>Qt 4 GUI. (Older releases can use Qt 3).</li>
<li>Searches most common
<a href="features.html#doctypes">document types</a>, emails and
their attachments. Transparently handles decompression
(gzip, bzip2).</li>
<li>Powerful query facilities, with boolean searches,
phrases, proximity, wildcards, filter on file types and directory
tree. </li>
<li>Multi-language and multi-character set with Unicode based
internals.</li>
<li><a class="weak" href="features.html">(more detail)</a></li>
</ul>
<p><i>Recoll can index an <b>MS-Word</b> document stored as
an <b>attachment</b> to an <b>e-mail message</b> inside
a <b>Thunderbird folder</b> archived in a <b>Zip file</b>
(and more...). It will also let you open a copy of the file
without any fuss. There is little that will remain hidden on
your disk :)</i></p>
<p><b><i>Recoll user ?</i></b> Maybe there are still a few useful
tricks that you don't know about. A quick look at
the <a href="usermanual/rcl.search.tips.html">search
tips</a> might prove useful ! Also the

<h2>News: </h2>
<ul>
<li>2011-05-29: release
<a href="download.html#source">1.15.9</a> fixes a startup
crash in 1.15.8. This occurs only on some architectures, and
if you are not experiencing the problem (it happens every
time if at all), you do not need to upgrade.
</li>
<li>2011-05-02: release
<a href="download.html#source">1.15.8</a> is out with
<a href="BUGS.html#b_1_15_7">bug fixes</a> and a few
<a href="release-1.15.html">improvements</a>.
</li>
<li>2011-03-26: added a filter for konqueror webarchive (.war)
format, and elementary support for mimehtml (.mhtml). These
work with stock recoll 1.15, you just need to install the filter
and config adjustments.</li>
<li>2010-11-29 : Recoll <a href="download.html#source">1.14.4</a> is
out. This is a small bugs fix release, the important <a
href="CHANGES.html">changes</a> were in 1.14.2. 1.14.4 was
released a few days after 1.14.3 because of an ennoying email
preview bug in the latter.
</li>
<li>2010-11-20 : wrote a small script so that recoll can be
activated or hidden with a single keystroke on the gnome
desktop. See the
<a href="http://bitbucket.org/medoc/recoll/wiki/HotRecoll">
installation recipee here</a>.</li>
<li>2010-01-29 : the full Recoll source repository is now
hosted on
<a href="http://bitbucket.org/medoc/recoll">Bitbucket</a>,
along with a Wiki
(<a href="http://bitbucket.org/medoc/recoll/wiki/FaqsAndHowTos">
Faqs and Howtos</a>) and an
<a href="http://bitbucket.org/medoc/recoll/issues">
issues tracking system</a>. Hopefully, this
new channel for reporting bugs and make suggestions will
increase the feedback rate...</li>
</ul>
<h2><a name="support">Support</a></h3>
