uniform execution environment for vf-OS Assets. This environment is controlled by the developers through meta-information
attached to the assets.

With all assets running in a uniform execution environment, access to these assets (mostly to the vApps) is provided
through a single access webportal, providing a shared look-and-feel, and user experience, for all vf-OS vApps.

<h4>Single Sign-On, overarching security model</h4>
<p>
Integrated into the platform is a security model, which controls the inter-asset communication. From the viewpoint of
the enduser, the system provides a single sign-on, integrated into the portal, after which they can access each vf-OS Asset
in a secure and cooperative manner.

<h4>Uniform handling of on-premises vs cloud</h4>
<p>
Through the uniform execution environment, the vf-OS Assets can run equally on premises as on a cloud service. Through a
proxy model, access from on-premise assets to cloud assets is provided, in a secure and effective fashion.

<h2>Platform</h2>

<p>Based on off-the-shelf, industry-standard containerisation technology, Docker, the vf-OS Platform provides a homogenous
environment for vf-OS Assets to run in. The platform provides various services for the deployment, configuration,
execution, and debugging of vApps and other components.</p>
<p>A driving design constraint for the platform is the security model of vf-OS, which limits the inter-asset communication
options and provides a uniform user and organisational model. This model has led to a separation of assets in
independent networks, sharing a central reverse-proxy, forming a star-network topology. This central reverse-proxy
actually supports two main communication protocols: HTTP-based (Web, RESTful, etc.) and AMQP. For the latter there is a
message-broker available, part of the Publish/Subscribe and Messaging components of vf-OS.</p>
<p>On top of the execution environment, several services are provided as integrated parts of the platform. Among others,
these consist of the web-portal, a Docker registry, deployment services, and the System-Dashboard.</p>
